Avi Ella was born in 1951 in Jerusalem into a family of new immigrants of Kurdish origin, who came to Israel from Iraq. He grew up in the picturesque neighborhood of Nachlaot in Jerusalem and chose to attend a vocational high school, rather than the prestigious Rehavia "Gymnasia" high school. His technical studies later proved to be the platform which enabled him to execute his individualistic ideas in the form of impressive sculptures in different materials - primarily stone, marble and bronze.
Ella's works of sculpture are created from a place of empathy and a need to touch and caress, though a process of ongoing dialogue - with the environment, Man, evil and friendship, and from the need to conserve values of respect for the other. His work is deeply influenced by extant classical works of sculpture and he incorporates these inspirations into his constructions.

רק בשנות החמישים לחייו החל אלה לפסל ואף לחשוף את פסליו העשויים משיש ומברונזה. עד אז פיסל "במחתרת" בעיקר בסגנון Ready-Made Art המבוסס על לקיחת עצם מן המוכן והפיכתו ליצירת אמנות, גם מתוך התחברות אמיתית לסגנון פיסול זה, וגם אולי מתוך חוסר הביטחון האישי ביכולותיו ליצור גם אומנות פיסול קלאסית אותה הוא העריך מאוד והתייחס אליה כ"אין להשתמש בהם אלה לראותם בלבד".
Today, Ella sculpts in a range of media in a variety of styles and materials. The major influence of classical sculpture is clearly discernible as a major source of inspiration in the creation of his sculptures. At the same time, he adds his personal stamp and his unique perspective to these works, articulating his own creative, sculptural language.
